Float alternatives

Postby Eomund » Mon Apr 27, 2020 2:49 pm

just got a message on ebay. All my parts coming from Germany are being returned to sender due to the pandemic.

My floats are shot. Hairline cracks over the whole things. I need new floats for this bike to work and I can only get one from Germany. Has anyone come across any alternatives? From another bike or something?

old bmw floats pre/1970 were bad about this they run up/down on a pin and i used to carry CORKS
from wine bottles drill hole in cork and adjust to work proper it was a pain but it worked

i store the new floats in a home machined container and when bike is stored as air pressure
changes over time are hard on the brass ones used in Bing and Amal
new old stock goes bad over time from the air pressure changes

Ya. I found a place that sells brand new. But its in Germany. I've found a few other bikes ie yamha nad Suzuki that have metal floats. But I don't know how big they are. I think i can transfer the mount. But I'm not so sure about the diameter of them. And the little turkeys aren't cheap so I'm hoping to have a little more info before any money is spent

Is this message from german or from english post ?
I never heard that post traffic is cancelled between UK and germany.

I just sent parts to UK and until now they did not come back.

It just so happens I have brand new floats. But they are for BVF 30n2.5 (and I think they work with 30n3) carbs..

What is your application?

Following a biased and flawed moderator choice (someone posting aggressive personal attacks is rewarded, while my technical posts are removed - behind my back & without any justification!), I have withdrawn from this forum.

Well, I never tried repairing a float, but I do know that if you don't try, you certainly won't win. And the worst that can happen is that you ruin a float that was unusable to start with.

I never had to try it; the one in my BVF is still fine, and those in my Jikov's are both fine too. Modern carbs use PE (poly ethylene) floats, which are obviously flexible & impervious to petrol/gas/fuel.
