With all those parts it sounds you had a pretty good deal on that Saxon, Alan!

There's an older thread on a ETZ250 that doesn't shift gears well after reassembly; best check that right after you put the 2 halves together. Common practise so probably not a very useful reminder.

Hi Puffs,
I will try again. Yes it wasn't a bad deal at £682, I thought I was just buying a Saxon Tour, quite a nice surprise. It was a great day, I arranged to meet
some friends from Hebdon Bridge in a Toby Inn and we had a great meal a pint and a blether and then home, life is good sometimes.

Hi M,
Thanks for asking about the Honda, It is up and running in a roadworthy condition all except the tank, because of all the bikes in the garage I have to do my spraying in the garden and as such I am of course subject to wind and warmth and with the new paint system you can't cut back if you get a run you have to start again and then lacquer, and I ran out of time and then Covid arrived so the Honda is all fine except finally on the tank, to be honest M I am being a bit finicky with it, it looks quite good. As I said earlier I was rebuilding the Saxon 301 out of the boxes probably to see if I could, and if it all went well then sell it on
and it would pay for the original Saxon, but, it's turned out so well I will probably sell the original Saxon instead we'll see. I am actually trying to make sense of all the bits that are left from the build and sort the mess in the garage and hopefully if the sun shines I will post some pics of the Saxon

Aha.. I would love to know how the two speed (?) machine runs like and how usable it is.. I wonder what The Artist Formerly Known as Prince thought of it.. :lol: :lol:



I'm also in the process of rebuilding my spare Honda engine- not too far off completion now.. After that, I need to go rifling through my Honda parts (I have a few boxes) in regards as to what I should keep, and what I should shift. Some of the stuff is random bits from bikes I know nothing about or where these parts are from. :lol:

As far as running is concerned, I live at the end of a cul-de-sac and I have ridden it round the circle so I am bursting to give it a propper go, but with the shutdown. Let us hope we are near the end of this blasted virus. Honest M this forum really gives me a laugh so often, keeps me from going nuts, especially that poor chap doing his toe in on the kick start lever. I have called that lever a few names myself. Honda parts, very expensive, when I was trying to fix the CB400A
ignition, a genuine ignition system for that bike from Japan £1495 now we complain about the cost of Power Dynamo system but you get what you pay for.

Hmm, that sounds interesting - a parallel twin 400, 3V with an automatic 2 gear box! Never saw that in the flesh...

Yes, it was a real problem, the trouble is with classics is (not MZ's though, thank goodness) that most of the parts one needs for a refurb are as the bike, 40 yrs old so, often the parts you buy are just as bad as the ones you are getting rid of ie I have 4 sets of genny coils for the Honda and for that particular bike
the CB250/350/400 have lots of variants, I needed a Guesi on Honda's. The other problem is that unless you buy from Silvers (very high prices) then you have to look in the US (great prices) until the import paraphernalia, so, sadly it's not that easy.

Yes I see the complete official generator/ignition at https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb400a-engl ... partslist/ is indeed close to €1200, but those guys are never cheap. But it is available, and maybe there is an alternative?

Sorry, I could not picture the Saxon in the sunlight, it keeps raining. The lower pic. has the original Saxon in the foreground, the other one of course is the one I have just finished building.

As it happens I have always had a hankering for the 500 Rotax one, but now I see the two of them and remembering that I actually bought the one in the pic foreground and the other one which I knew nothing about which was in bits and seven boxes for an all-up price of £682, about $825 and to be fair you can
double that price with all the new parts, it gives me a big smile though.
