Anyone know anything about coils???

Postby JawasandMZs » Thu Apr 29, 2021 2:20 pm

I think I've damaged the coil on my ts 150 (which is converted to Vape) by touching the live AC wire against a wire that goes in. It works but fails under load. I have found an exact replacement on ebay but it's a HUNDRED QUID!!!
Would any 12v coil work? Or even a bog standard etz coil from my spares box?
The original fault, now resolved I think, was caused by the person who installed the vape who used the indicator relay as the ignition relay rather than the proper relay that was provided with the kit. Im now working with a manual kill switch.

Please help!

Thanks for the answers!

Vape strongly go outta their way to stress that their gear is mega reliable so who else can i blame?

Sadly, you won't be able to just use any old coil with the Vape system, as their coil has the CDI unit built in. It should be possible to find a compatible replacement, though. I am sure I have read elsewhere that one of these will work. I have been meaning to buy one to keep on the shelf as a spare, so I'd be interested to hear how you get on!

Alternatively, it should be possible to use a separate AC CDI and coil setup, available even cheaper from ebay, but I don't know if these have been tried with the Vape system yet.

I thought any single/double 12v coil would work. I. E any coil at all, they all input at the switch side (low voltage) 12v through a single connector and give out (bang side) thousands of amps across the sparkplug gap. Most of them (in my opinion also work with some car Cdi's) are compatible with each other.
Only way to find out is to try. As they're all 12v positive or negative earth. As I have a box filled with Kawasaki Ar125 12v coils and some are also Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and Italian 50-100cc Itchiefany's. And they all worked with my countless single cylinder Ar's and Honda.

The trouble is that the Vape system has the coil and CDI box potted into the same unit, so if you just replaced it with a 'normal' coil you'd have half the ignition system missing!

The original 60w dynamo/contact breaker system was as basic as you got. The Vape gives you, contactless ignition timing and 160-180w three phase altenator (even so, how much power does a small Mz motorbike use, not much more than 95w) And 12v of course. A coil is still a coil, even if its shape is strange. They normally have one or two wires going in.. One pos 12v power one, one switched neg one. And not forgetting the high tension thick black one to the plug. Still not very complicated as ignition systems go.

As it is mentioned above, the Vape coil has the CDI parts inside.
So there is no way that a normal iginition coil will work on a vape system.
You have to replace it with a Vape ignition coil.

@gerryman : We all know how an ignition coil looks. But the thread was about a Vape system......

Thanks all for your responses. Have gone for a pattern coil designed for the MZ Simson which looks virtually the same as the one for the TS 150. Just £14 as opposed to over a hundred!
Will let you nice people how I get on and so add a bit to our knowledge bank:)

I'm sorry Tom. My wiring ability wouldn't be able to fix a coil :( From what i've read they're intermixed with different cababilities (ie cdi/coil) so I'm not sure if it's a case of just putting another coil on unless it was an replacement from the original provider...

Though, others here seem to have have good ideas/pointers.

Meh, the advert does say "Ignition coil", not cdi and coil combined" cannot blame anyone for false advertising. And pray tell, even though most Mzs don`t have something as simple as a advance/retard system how do they work goin up hill. The vape uses the exact same crank position sender (but transistorized) how does it know? Even though I do have a circuit tester and a multimeter in my garage, But sometimes helping people has to many cooks ruining the same broth.
