Returning to the fold....

Postby phoenix76rb » Tue Jun 10, 2014 5:24 am

Hi, this is Tim Morrow in Herndon, Virginia. Just bought a 1996 Skorpion Sport; my third MZ 660. I previously owned a race-only 660 Sport just like this one, but without any street equipment, and after that, a 2002 Tour that I bought new, and unfortunately sold several years later. Looking forward to participating in the forum!

Image

5,600 miles. Immaculate condition except a bit of road rash at the base of the right fork leg, and a beveled edge on the brake master cylinder. Looks like all the other damaged parts were replaced with factory new bits, whenever the lowside was suffered.

Needs fork seals, and the front rotor cleaned, and new front brake pads due to contamination from the weeping fork oil. Has new Metzlers and a new battery, and I have the european-style rear fender extension and the passenger pillion pad, along with the owner's manual and the original paperwork from inside the delivery crate.

Everything works except the clock on the dash.

Thanks, Dave. I also forgot to mention that I also used to have an MZ 125RT; another bike that I wish I had never sold!

Sweet Skorpion! Another MZ owner "nearby", that makes 4 within a 60 mile radius that I know of. :)

So, I ordered front brake pads; got the wrong ones. Took the caliper off anyway, removed the pads, cleaned off all the fork oil contamination from the rotor, caliper, and pads, the fork leg, the fender, etc, and reassembled. The bike stops much better now. Waiting for the new fork seals to arrive from England this week. Adjusted the shift lever downward, adjusted the rear brake pedal downward, took the bike out for a ride, feels 1,000% better and more fun with the ergos adjusted to fit me and my riding position. Took it out on the highway at 70+ mph for the first time and it felt very stable and capable. Hard to get used to a low powered bike after years with extremely overpowered bikes. Funny, since I never had more than about 55hp for my first 20 years riding, but the last 18 years have been on ever-faster bikes for the most part.

Debating on whether to take this MZ up to my "home" track at Summit Point, WVa on July 4th for a track day that I plan to attend, or to just ride my normal track "weapon," which is a 2003 Ducati 1000SS that I have built for track use only. I always loved racing slow bikes, but on track days there are so many fools out there on 150+hp hyperbikes that I have found that being on a really slow bike can be .... disconcerting.

Decisions, decisions.

we have a guy here with a restored brick a kaw h1 750cc 3 cylinder wonder he has not kill his self on it.

he went past me on the local curved in the middle bridge wobbling so bad i thought he was going to lose it...

i am easy to please rt125 works good most of the time..

saxon tour 500cc takes up the slack

working on a r75/5 going to put it in a r69s frame for a sidecar machine

Here we are, six years later. Sold the MZ to my brother-in-law in 2015, and bought it back this year. Finally fixed those fork seals.

like your work stands
i use a chain hoist
and add an other rope to make sure it stays there

or set it on a bike lift raise it up about 20 inches and tie it off above

then let the lift down a bit

i fell in the yard a couple years ago VERY HARD FACE PLANT

and now have trouble working on some things that are down on the floor

my chiropractor says i am a train wreck i know i am it hurts

Hi David, the stands are leftovers from my racing career - very handy to have. Sorry to hear about your fall. Glad you’re hanging in there and still active here!

Hi Tim, good to see the Skorpion gets some TLC.
Indeed, without suitable supports for the bike, jobs like that get to be a lot more difficult.

Enjoy!
