things to check

Postby DAVID THOMPSON » Sun Jan 14, 2007 6:24 pm

my rt 125 lost the starter relay with less than 3000 miles on it
not sure where it is on your bike
some of the bikes have a side stand switch they will not start if it goes bad
thank goodness your in england .. you may find a dealer that can fix it
here in the USA we are up a creek with no paddle when they die

Andy, I would start with the most obvious and simple things and work towards the complicated possibilities. Have you checked the fuses and relays under the seat? I will look at my schematic and see what relays are for what and let you know via pm. Give each relay a good tap and check the fuses and go from there. I suspect it is something simple. :smt017

so is this a no crank, or no start with engine cranking? will it bump start?
possibly kickstand switch? does the neutral light come on in neutral?

in my experience with cars (I am a master tech with a diagnostic background) hot soak no starts with the engine cranking are usually a enginge position or cam position sensor if they are reluctance type (2 wire)
or bad solder joints in a relay or component. since it is fuel injected, if you have spark, and can hear the injector clicking with a mechanics stethascope then probably fuel supply. if no spark but good injector pulse then suspect ignition coil (unlikely since yours has dual coil on plug). if no spark or injectors, then suspect a sensor or ecu. if it quits hot, and re starts after 30 min, try putting the ecu or suspected component in the freezer for 5 minutes and if it starts, then repeat to confirm the problem.

does the tach needle move when cranking? if it does then engine sensors and ecu probably ok, suspect fuel supply.

usually if the ecu light is on, then ecu is powered up.

mz 1000s broke down

Postby mzsrus » Mon Jan 15, 2007 6:29 am

all electrics seem ok,

when turn mbike on at ignition, the mz runs through the normal checks on the dash.

its just when u push starter button, nothing happens.
it will not bump start, did try but bit frightened might break something.

It will not turn over crank at all, just seized up on trying to bumpstart.

so god know hopefully going to mbike dealership today or tues 16th Jan,

I need.want wiring diagram if anyone gots one, hopefully just a switch or sensor faulty.

Best wishes from Wild and wet Wales

Andy
Try jumping the starter solenoid, my guess is the handel bar switch not making contact, what with all the dry weather riding you do
Good luck Bill

The ECU (engine) light comes on and stays on until the engine starts, then it goes out. Just to verify what I was thinking, I just turned the key on mine with the switch in the run position without pushing the start button...the ecu light stays on....... until it's started.

Did the ecu light come on prior to stopping the engine at the petrol station or did you only notice the light afterwards?

The ECU light has nothing to do with the starter relay I'm fairly certain.
If the light came on prior to stopping the engine, that would point to other issues....which I doubt.

Try the jumping of the solenoid terminals, and if it cranks, then either your not getting voltage to the solenoid from the start button...most likely corroded terminals, or the solenoid is bad (the contacts that take power from the start button) . You could open up the handlebar switch housing and have a peek also....spray a little electrical contact cleaner on the button contacts.

Keep us posted...there are plenty here to offer help. :-D

mzsrus,
Don't know if this will help...
Go to main page, select forum and then scroll down to 1000s.
The fourth post down should be from m4panther.
(I just got a complete parts number catalog on cd-rom.)
It shows the harness assemblies, but not a schematic, GRRR!
I would hope that this might help isolate the problem. The only issue that I've read on the forum has had to do with moisture getting into the controls.
I don't know if any of this helps, just hopeing.
Regards,
Robert
