Does anyone know of a source of replacement pencil coils for the 1000 series machines? Mine has just eaten its second coil and at £80 a time I would like an alternative.

One of the German sites reckoned that Renault coils would fit the 1000, the Renault part number given was Part #: 8200380267. Might be worth having a word with your local motor factor. I know that the Benelli triples have the same problems with coils as the MZ and I'm pretty sure they were using Renault or Peugot coils as replacements.

Might also be worth having a word with Red Dog motorcycles, as I heard they had sourced better quality units for the Benelli that might just work on the MZ.

Thanks for all the info and advice. This would only be a niusance problem were it not for the rather more serious matter of unburnt fuel from the failed cylinder turning the catalyst in to a reheat chamber and damn near setting the bike on fire if you do not shut down asap. The cat is the next on my list of "items not required on voyage" and will be consigned to the bin as a health and safety measure.

Hello Boilermaker,

Can you confirm the Renault pencil coil replacement part no. yet?

Also await your wisdom on making the cat redundant. (as you say, the whole plot can get very hot!)

Maybe we can get a run going to the West Country to say hello?

I have not yet checked on the renault coil as I am trying another tack in sealing up my new coils in epoxy resin (as the manufacturer should have done) but I will be purchasing a renault coil soon as a spare. As to the cat I will need to set up a jig in a friends workshop to maintain flange alignment when I remove?replace the section of tube containing the offensive item. As to the visit, you are all very welcome to call at any time and although I have a very small home I am sure we can sort something out as we also have a couple of B&Bs in the village. As some of you already know that this is an area of outstanding natural beauty (as I type this I am looking out from the 12th floor of my office at dawn rising over snowy Dartmoor on one side and a calm misty sea out to the eddystone light on the other side) and Devon is also a "biker friendly" county.

Hi All,
Just to add to this debate I have a Renault Kangoo Trekka. During the 12000 miles of use over 3-4 years I have replaced all the original Segam pencil coils. Each time a coil malfunctioned there was no warning, just an engine now running on three cylinders. Cost of replacement via main dealer would of been approx £50 and motor factor £25 each etc. By far the most economic is via E-bay with choice of manufacturer etc. Segams are normall most expensive, but they did not last long in the above vehicle. First failure approx 4K miles. My advise would be to buy mid range in price with a few spare. The set I purchased ?about £50 for four are all performing well. I am due to service my 1000s in next few weeks and will then compare the bikes originals to my spares. Will post findings.

what make /type, pencil coils did u get of ebay,could do with replacing mine b4 the oe ones let me down

When you obtain a coil I would purchase 2 of them and carry one as a spare (reminds me of two strokes 50 years ago with a spare plug!) as "limping" home is not an option.

i intend to carry aspare but what i want to know is which coils are a suitable fit for the mz,i have reservations about using renault coils as they are liable to failure ,i had a renault 2003 megane and it was a known fault,also went on the aprillia forum and the capanord apparantley uses the same sagam coils ,and a owner was advised to use nippon denso although which type of nippon was not mentioned :evil: ,so i need to know which will fit my sf,obviousley they will have to be the same physical size ,but wont they electronically have to be the same ,voltage amps ohms resistance ,whatever :?:

Try the benelli website as they have a similar problem, in fact these bloody things seem to be a problem to all!

I have seriously considered reverting to a seperate coil set up as the plug caps for my TRX 850 would fit very well, but once again the volt/ampere characteristics of any chosen seperate coil would have to match.

Hi Ged,
Unable to recall the exact make of coil, I just purchased mid-range in price. Good quality when they did arrive but were definately not Nippon Denso. Part numbers were rather confusing as there are many numbers which pertain to the same vehicle (possibly indicating suitable coils from differing manufacturers). In my humble opinion if the physical size of the coil and especially the wiring connection is the same I cant see why their should be any difference. MZ, Aprilia, Bennelli and even Renault et al would have purchased the most economical and easily obtainable parts when designing their ignition/injection systems (except Bimota and my SB8 but thats another story) which essentially in the above are doing the exactly the same. Simplistic view maybe, but I will compare when I service my 1000s.

Today has been a complete dissaster,i gave my bike a service oilk filters and plugs and now it wont start.any body have any ideas what ive done wrong.can anyone tell me which is cylinder number 1,in case ive got the coil leads mixed up although i did swap them round and it made no differance,could the coils have failed ,because i removed them from the bike,they wernt dropped or damaged.i may of unknowingly pulled a wire,somewhere,is there a way to test the coils ,im at a loss and ive packed my tools away in disgust :evil: i will have a look again tomorrow ,any suggestions would be most welcome
