To all
Anyone had any problems with lever travel? I am having minor problems selecting first on down change, checked all external possibilities would rather not contemplate opening box if someone has a suggestion/info.

I found this online...

This is almost always caused by grime building up on the shafts, causing some binding.... the spring can'[t return to it's correct position, so you can't get the second shift done.

Take either some WD-40, or some Lithium spray on grease, and lubricate every single pivoting point in the shifter linkage. The lever pivot, the ball joints at either end of the shifter rod, and especially the input shaft to the transmission.

Should clear right up.

Well lads
Looks as if I am going to have to pull the gear selector machanism to replace the return spring. I think that I will replace all three springs whilst I am about it. Will let you know how I get on. This means the Yamaha will have to come out of hibernation!

I had this problem with my ST, and all I did was to loosen the screw a touch on the gearchange ball joint and use a lock nut to secure it. I had no problems since.

Hi Boilermaker,
I've done exactly the same as the previous post on the ST. When I had the 'slide off' and initially fitted the S lever, I did it up too tight and could only change gear up through the box with difficulty, couldn't change down at all!
Slackening it off a tad and adding a lock nut solved my problem. When I straightened the original ST lever and re-fitted it, I put a lock nut on this as well. Works perfectly. I was getiing horrible ideas about diving into the gear selectors too.

How many 1000s made it to NZ then because as far as I know next to none made it to OZ.

I'd be guessing but it can't be more than 10 in New Zealand; mainly 1000S's and 1000SF's. The Brook Brothers in New Plymouth had the import agency for them, but they never really caught on; even though they got good reviews in the local motorcycle press.
There's a low km 1000S currently for sale in Hamilton for a good price: http://www.hamiltonmotorcycles.co.nz/us ... nsport.htm. If I had a few spare $ I'd buy it and put it away.

Had the same prob. with my 1000S, one of the selector springs was broken; this caused me not being able to down gear. I had no service manual at that stage and it took me a long time to identify the prom. as the spring was broken in such a way that it was not easy noticeable.
The gear changes are still not smooth, maybe I’ll have to change all the springs, I will have to order them though and shipped to SA.
