Starter Motor 1000ST

Postby Stephenonz » Thu Nov 19, 2009 2:22 am

Hello all - has anybody found an alternative starter motor that will work on the MZ 1000? Mine has a damaged spline resulting from the step gear losing a few teeth. The starter motor, a Mitsuba SM 13, is also used on Honda VTR1000s / Honda CBR900RR / Honda Hornet 900 / Ýamaha TRX 850's along with many other bikes. I've got hold of a Honda Hornet starter motor, however, the Hornet starter is a bit shorter (which can be resolved) but it spins the wrong way; ie clockwise on the Hornet vs anti-clockwise on the MZ. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Give Rick's Motorsports Electrics a call, among all things motorcycle electrics, they have starter brush plate kits for clockwise and counterclockwise rotation starters. You should be able to change the rotation just by using a counter clockwise plate kit. :D

In USA but ship overseas. 800-521-0277

Thanks for the tip. I'm getting an auto electrician to have a look at it.

I don't suppose anyone has come across another Mitsuba starter with the same armature?

I thought I'd better update this. The auto electrician was unable to reverse the starter motor and so I sent it back to the wrecker. I did find, however, that Yamaha jet ski starter motors (P/N 63M-81800-00) had the right boss size, spline size and spins the right way; but are a bit shorter. I ordered 2 off ebay and made up an adapter plate. The bike is now starting fine again. Grahams again gave great service in supplying the step gear and gasket.

Stephanoz
Useful info, especially for me as I have a TRX Yam as well as the MZ.
