Tank positioning

Postby dave_tat » Mon May 30, 2011 2:15 pm

Hi All,
More tales of woe, Had great difficulty lifting the tank, Had to release rear pivot bolts, replaced reset back to same position, tank has moved forward about 10 mm and is virtually impossible to to swing up or down, it hits the frame you can force it in but then the alignment of the bolts are out of position, has anyone else had this problem.Just want to go for a ride, but concerned.

if your talking about the 660 bikes they swell and get longer from the crazy fuel mixing of things they did not use 10 or 15 years ago fight it back in place and hope you can get it back on next time
it took 2 trys on mine i dumped the fuel out and got it cold in the freezer and it went on
but dont get to ruff with it
working on it on a hot day may not be a good idea

Thanks Dave,
I removed the 2 bushing bolts lifted it clear of the frame and then replaced the bolts of course reversed on refitting, Took the bike to the Ducati dealer no luck, a bit like talking to a policeman, the ECU plug is a totally different plug, Bike is strange, in gear when I come to stop runs at 3000 rpm when I select neutral drops to 1500, I seafoamed it as per the video, but engine light still on a bit of an improvement but nothing like a performance machine more like a cossak, I will get 2 coils in the UK I leave tomorrow, and have another go at it when I get back will try and get some Bosch FR6DTC's s well, I'm getting too old to be messing about with something I know so little about, Bring back the 10TT9s
Thanks for all the help from all that replied, maybe feel better after a few weeks at home,
Dave

Dave
If you are coming back to the UK then pick up a cheap fault code reader. The socket on the bike ia a standard automotive one, its only awkward bastard manufacturers who fit odd plugs/sockets I will pm you a name for the reader.

Hi George,
Back and weather better than i thought, look forward to your mail with details of fault code reader, also will try an find a workshop manual for the bike only have the handbook, bosch plugs a couple of pencil coils and the job should be a gud un. Bike has only done 9400miles so hopefully get these probs sorted and will be good to go for a long time.

My tank has done the same thing, but not as severe. The lower front part of the tank just hits the little frame plate at the steering head, and the metal mounting bracket that you bolt down hits the steering head when lifted, I just have to cock it a little to clear. I also have a little warpage/deforming on the right side of the tank knee contour. A buddy just had his 07 Ducati Monster tank replaced (under warranty) due to the same problem, which is a common problem I hear. Acerbis made the MZ tanks as well as the Ducati's.......so it's obvious there is some problem there, as well as the fuels today not helping matters.

It must be a change in materials over the years, my triumph Speedtriple bought in 2000 has a plastic tank and has not had a problem, I have not heard of it being a problem on any other Triumphs although I believe they all use steel tanks now.

Well this is good news of a sort,I thought the frame may have been bent.
Mine is so bad I had to remove the rear bushings, bolts and sleave to get it past the upper triple.

I dont know if my bike is any different to anyone else's but my tank can be raised with no problems at all. I remove the forward fixing plate before lifting.

Using a rat tail file make the rear mounts into slots so the tank moves back like so.
