MZ/MuZ Riders

Hey everyone,

Just became the proud owner of a 2005 silver 1000s with just over 10K miles. Wanted to see how the reliability has been for these bikes and any info for items to look out for would be very much appreciated! Also, the bike runs great and have added a joyful 50 miles on it already. Also, does anyone know of a high mileage MZ 1000s?

Used to own a 06 Harley Street Rod with the Porsche engine which I meticulously took care of, so no stranger to working with german engineering.

Congrats on the purchase of a great bike. Neither of mine have high mileage, but last year one of my coils went bad while out riding.
Other than that I've had no problems. Where might you be located ?

What oil brand would you guys recommend? Tires?

Any quality full synthetic oil in SAE 10W-40 API SG or 10W-50 . 3.7L
I currently running Avon storm 3's which I like very much.

The only weak point on these machines are the plug coils but there are a few standard commercial replacements for them. A German Magazine ran a long term test on these engines a couple of years back and found no measurable wear at about 50,000 miles.

Congrats on your purchase SilverBullet2019, I've got an SF with only about 22k miles on it but have had no real problems apart from gear lever return spring failure and plug coils, I now make my own so problem solved.

I'm really liking the bike a lot and the more I ride it the more I like it. So far, it has fresh fluids, air and oil filter, brakes, battery, spark plugs and about to put a new set of Michelin shoes. However, I do wish they made a riser for the handlebar and stiffer mirror stems, it would make this S1000 absolutely perfect!

No.

There is one point you should realy check. The screw which is fixing the tensioning rail for the cam chain. Here the link to the german board http://mz1000.motomonster.de/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=27.

There had been a few engine blow-up in the past.

Thanks Thorsten, there is a lot of stuff to go through on a translator so could you give us the important facts about this problem?

The pictures are most interesting.

MZ has build less bikes than planned. So these self-locking screws (is this the word?) in stock are becoming old. That's why they are not as solid as they should be.

It is easy to check and to fix it with loctite.

Fyi, Loctite is a brand of adhesives, sealants and surface treatments. See also http://henkeladhesivesna.com/blog/the-d ... adlockers/ for some notes on use.

Of course there are also other thread locking compounds that work fine.
