Have you removed the stator before trying to get the bike running?

Did all wires go back correctly. I was rushing some months ago and mixed up the wires and blew my Stator.. Only charged with lights on..

Is it wired up according to the following diagramme? I take it your's has electronic ignition ??

Also.. Does it not charge with the lights on too? If it doesn't, then it 'could' be regulator.

Ok so I’ve potentially found the issue, after removing the regulator from the alternator I’ve found two of the three wires that are soldered to the circuit board have come away, going to have a pop at resoldering and will let you know if the result! Thanks again for all the advice on this!

Sorted!! I've had to extend the wires coming from the windings and re solder them to the circuit board of the regulator and it is now charging as soon as I get to a certain RPM as someone mentioned It would. I do have one question though! I have confirmed the increase in volts at the battery as the revs increase but every time the revs drop the battery light will come back on, is that the norm on other Saxons?

Congrats Warner! Loose wires is never good.

I don't know specifically about the later Saxon you have, but on my '89 ETZ251 the charge light goes out the moment the engine runs/ticks over, and never comes back on as long as the engine runs.

On my 6V Jawa, the charge light came on when ticking over, and switched off with a bit of throttle. And that charge system worked fine too, so the light @ low rev tick-over need not necessarily indicate there is a problem. It just indicates that at those low revs you're using more current than you generate.

Check that you have, with all the lights on, a decent voltage above, say, 2000RPM, and without lights not too much either at higher revs.

Well done!

Knew we'd get there!

Also, what speed is your engine idling at? Should be around 1,200-1,300rpm.

Sometimes my charging light comes on (12v ETZ) when I have started the bike without throttle or choke as it is already warm, and it doesn't go away until some RPM is initiated- when I ride away. Sometimes it comes on a little faintly, when there is a steep gradient or something.

The charging should start around 1,500- is that when your light extinquishes?

sorry for late reply, I've been busy fettling!

The Rev counter seems to be faulty as it just does whatever it likes, even runs backwards but by ear I'd say that the engine is ticking over in the right rev range, however the light doesn't extinguish until a slightly higher RPM is applied but I'm happy with that as its charging whilst riding and the battery is holding its charge after a long run with all lights on. so it looks like that particular issue is a thing of the past, now on to the crazy Rev counter............

Thanks again for all your help guys. :-D

It looks like I currently have the same issue as you. Charge light not extinguishing <3k (though it is only on Dimly), but bike does charge.
