Intermittent Stalling

Postby Blurredman » Wed Sep 04, 2019 5:06 am

Hi Guys,

I've had a long standing problem with my ETZ250 for a while now. I rebuilt the engine in it some 3 or 4 months ago, and have been riding it every day to work.

I have always had a problem with my MZ's in that they start to degrade in their running before time- They start stalling at traffic lights, or when headlamp is turned on, or indicator is in use. After a long time searching for the problem I always find that the issue is resolved if I replace the spark plug- But ultimately this problem keeps re-appearing in as little as 1,000 miles- to which replacing the spark plug keeps the bike going for a while longer.

But it has been occuring with quite a tenacity- instead of replacing the spark plugs I started cleaning them, which worked for a while but the stalling soon came back- So I wondered if this was not a spark plug thing but something else behind this issue.

I have timed the bike properly, I have replaced the points, the wiring is all on point that I can see. The spark plug itself looks great. Also new ht lead and Cap.

The thing I must mention is this:

The bike does not stall out necessarily.. Whilst waiting at traffic lights the bike will 'mis' just the once, and then keep going for a second. But that 'mis' is an identifier to me. If I do not keep the rpm to at least 1600 rpm after hearing/feeling that miss, the bike will stall- otherwise the bike won't stall or miss again (if rpm is kept up slightly higher than normal idle), and the bike will run happily throughout the journey. There is no problem whatsoever with the performance of it riding around, full throttle there is no missing, and even part throttle it runs perfectly.. The only problem I have is this issue at stop lights.

I have continued to use the bike with no issues for 4,000 miles (over the last 4 months) despite this problem... But of course it is annoying!

coil has also been swapped, for interest.

Any Ideas?

My ETZ did that for a while but after I cleaned the carb the problem was resolved.
