Finding Neutral

Postby MZFred » Sun Sep 22, 2019 9:23 am

Just finished running in my TS250/1 engine after a rebuild, bike goes well and no problems getting all the gears up and down the box. However have difficulty locating neutral when at a stand still, even tried locating neutral whilst still rolling but to no avail. Clutch full disengages the drive when in gear with no creeping whilst at stand still.

So any help advice would be most welcomed.

cable not pulling far enough things are still moving in the box

or wrong oil in the box ( hope its not a worn shift fork not pushing things far enough)

had a Yamaha ym1 clutch lever that was bent toward the handle bar just a bit.. it was not getting a full
stroke on the cable get it adjusted so it did not have the problem then at slow speeds
it then slipped at hi rpm

If the clutch doesn't drag (or creep, as you say), and if it shifts well otherwise, but when you try to find neutral, it goes directly from 1 --> 2, or 2 --> 1, it is indeed likely that neutral detent ball + spring (assuming the TS has that too, like the ETZ). It is accessible behind a bolt at the bottom of the crankcase.

The spring and ball, as a myth- should not stop you from finding neutral.. it's purpose is to make neutral easier (as in, to actually 'click' into neutral) but also to keep the drum in that position when selected..

It might be worth a look, but it's not normally something that should stop you finding neutral. Would you be able to find neutral if you raised the engine rpm more before trying to change into it?

Many bikes suffer from clutch drag, to some extent; as a habit put the bike in neutral before coming to a standstill.
