ETZ250 Kickstart Removal

Postby nice2day » Sun Apr 07, 2019 7:53 am

Something else now ...groan... :(

I can't knock out the kickstart cotter pin...Well not without exceeding my maximum limit of force as I don't want to bend anything.

I'm pretty sure it would come out if I could get some sort press on it such as the type used to remove car steering ball joints, (I don't have one) but another way might be if I could take the engine cover off the bike and leave the kickstart on the shaft. This way I could set up a tube and use a bench vice to press it out so.....

MY QUESTION IS: Is it possible to remove the left side engine cover with the kickstart STILL IN PLACE :?: :?: :?:

Much obliged for reading my post.

Both my bikes I have had to replace cotter pin, and indeed the kickstart itself...

You may or may not notice that your grip is not perpendicular with the bike. You may find your right foot is actually twisting left slightly as you kick it over..

This is because they have bent over the years and in most cases have actually split around the pivot engine side. The cotter pin will be bent. You will not easily get it out Without excessive force I am afraid... :/

EDIT

Just a quick edit- I realised your question was can you remove the cover with the kickstar in place. Yes indeed you can! That's one intrinsically special design I find very helpful!

Not only CAN you remove the side cover including the kickstarter, you MUST.

This is necessary to remove the kickstarter after removing the cover.
Else you won´t be able to install the kickstarter again.

After re-installing the kickstarter into the cover you can put both (cover and kickstarter as an unit) on the engine.

Maybe you should get you a repair manual ?
There it is described ....

Oh excellent....Many thanks again to both of you, Blurredman and Guesi...You are both real stalwarts of this forum and I am very much obliged.

I do have quite a few manuals and even though I have done a complete "301" strip-down, it was several years ago and have forgotten most of what I had to do, especially the technicalities of refitting the kickstart lever.

My very best regards.

:D

This video is most helpful indeed...

It's great to watch whilst building up your engine as it is in itself a building of an engine...

It even tells you of torque values, specifications of sizes, or requirements.

Hi Blurredman thanks for the heads up on these videos. In fact I have the original files I downloaded some 10 years ago before they were put onto YouTube. They are superb, (just like most other aspects of MZ motorcycles). I also enjoy the "cut glass" English accent on the descriptive narrative. It makes a pleasant change.
