A NOTE FOR OWNERS OF BIKES WITH THE ROTAX MOTOR

always shut down the rotax 504 motor with the compression release

if you shut it off with the key it can come up on the compression stroke
when stopping and then run backwards against the starter freewheel
after a few hundred times it is a $250usd do it yourself repair
dealers do not usually work on these unless they happen to have some one
on staff that owns a bike with one of these motors atk or matchless or ccm

so always stop it with the compression release then turn off the key

also check often the adjustment of the release cable
if is too tight it can cause a valve to be open just a bit and burn a valve or seat

ideal adjustment is when you set it on ... cranking the motor makes it pop closed

when adjusting the valves or having the tank off
replace the breather hose from top of the engine to the frame tank
it is a real pain to fix on the road and these bkes are all 8 to 12 years old
and some set in dealers showrooms for years so check it out

details on removing tank and seat on request.... it is a pain in the ass :)

ps
a note to do regular checks include the ground wire from battery to engine
and check the brown wire from battery to coil ....if the big wire is loose or bad ground it will burn the brown wire up trying to carry the load of the starter

also before a trip check to see that spark plug is tight in its hole
i have had mine come loose twice on long trips

Thanks for the tip on the comp release. Never thought of that. As for the seat and tank, thats not as big a pain as anything I seem to get into once I have them off! My first bike is still down with a bad crank bearing, THAT is a pain in the *ss! Did you see my question about my forks??

Good idea to kill it with the compression release.
Does anyone have some info on adjusting the valves?

I have a service manual that covers everything but the engine!
thanks

Hey Dave,

Can you elaborate on the repair when the starter freewheel goes wonky? I am about there, and my other bike is still down, and the motor is in pieces in someone elses garage. The starter itself and gears under the external cover (belt side) are fine, but the clanking and not engaging + noises are not pleasant, so I think it's best to leave it be unless I can repair. Thanks!

I agree the oil change is a pain but my bike has a plug (allen-head) in the middle of the banjo-bolt attaching the oil line to the lower part of the frame-tank so if you rig up a funnel and hose like this it's not too difficult to drain the tank, still have to remove the skid plate to get at the crankcase drains and remove the plastic cover to get at the oil filter...

My next project is to adjust the valves...

got the tip on compression releases from previous owner but did not think about the setting of the valve, thanks ! Is there a manual out there or a book that covers maintenance and how to do it. Most of this stuff can be figured out but with some insight It would save time ?
