MZ 500 Country Engine Noise and other questions

Postby roloscotusa » Fri Dec 14, 2012 2:07 pm

Hi,

I bought early in the summer a MZ 500 Country. The bike starts ok and runs reasonably well. Althought I haven't ridden too many miles on the bike. I am going to work on the bike this winter but I need advise on the few things:

- Engine Noise - These seems to be a lot of engine/valve clatter coming from the engine. The previous owner said this was normal for this type of Rotax engine. Is this really normal?

- Rotax engine specialist - Does anyone know of Rotax engine specialist that could rebuild the engine for me (Ideally in the North East USA)?

- Workshop Manual - Does anyone know where to get a workshop/repair manual for this bike?

- Flasher/indicators - Does anyone know where I can get a replacement flasher/indicator? They seem very similar to what's on a ETZ 301 Saxon fun. Are most of the part inter changeable with some ETZ model?

- Replacement Exhaust - Does anyone know a replacement exhaust for this model. I found this company in German that produces one but any other ideas would be greatly appreciated?

Sorry for all of the questions but I want to get cracking on the restoration of the bike.

All the best,

M

- Engine Noise - The engine in my Silver Star makes some valve noise, though the valve clearance and timing belt tensions have been assiduously adjusted. The noise is not alarming to me, but it's not as quiet as many Asian air cooled singles of similar size.

- Rotax engine specialist (Ideally in the North East USA) -

I eventually found the time to have a go at checking the valve clearances. The clearances were way out and needed adjustment. The bike now runs much quieter with minimal rattling which is excellent. I am not sure if I took the wrong approach but to get the tank off I had to take off the fairing and the headlight assembly which was more time consuming than adjusting the valves. Maybe there is an easier way.

Next task is to change the oil which seems to be a bit of a pain.

my Saxon Tour is a bit of a chore
even with the tank and wind screen separate
and best done out side as the fuel tap (PETCOCK) has to be removed
as it fowls against the bing carb when removing
