Baghira/Mastiff clutch cable

Postby homebrew123 » Wed Dec 27, 2017 5:50 pm

I have read on this forum that Yamaha XTZ660 Clutch cables can't be used on the Mastiff and Baghira bikes. Yes the cables have a different nipple at the handle bar clutch lever end, the MZ's have a small round nipple with a 10mm split barrel nipple fitted over it, whereas the Yamaha has a small 6mm soldered barrel nipple with a thin nylon sleeve. The solution to keeping the standard MZ (Domino) lever and perch (mount) is to purchase a Yamaha XTZ660 cable for £5.75 off ebay, and then purchase a nylon nipple sleeve from Venhill Cables that converts the standard Yamaha 6mm nipple, to a 10mm diameter for the MZ lever set up. I thought there would be a cheap and easy solution, and I have just fitted this to a Mastiff and a Baghira with no problems, and it works perfectly. The inner cable is meant to be 5mm longer on the Yamaha, but I can't see any difference when fitted, but if needed you may need a slightly longer threaded adjuster at the clutch lever, handle bar end. The total cost was £5.75 for the clutch cable, and 24p plus some postage for the nipple sleeves, so to make it worth the postage I bought 10 of the sleeves to use in the future. Hope this helps some of you.

my cable is from a rotax powered mz with a cannondale brake lever and a bunch of odd parts from my large collection of BMW bits and pieces
at the lower end to make it all work (97 660 traveller)

YES IT DOES!
I can`t believe how cheap that cable is!
For that price is was expecting a direct-from-China-two-week-wait job.
My 2003 Mastiff is still running the original cable, helped greatly by being lubricated occasionally with a cable oiler (another Ebay bargain) About time i treated it though i think.
This one appears to have a nipple sleeve already-

Yes that's the cable that I bought, but the nipple sleeve is only very thin, probably 6mm to 8mm, and the MZ is 10mm, so it's still loose in the lever, you could still use it like that, but better with the Venhill nipple sleeve 6mm-10mm.
