More electrical problems

Postby jugglia » Thu Jan 14, 2010 7:47 am

Hi all,
sold my bike to a friend recently, and of course it immediately started having problems (such is life). After dealing with several of these we are now faced with some sort of electrical short. The bike turns on fine, but as soon as I press the ignition switch it dies completely. I don't know where to begin with this, can anybody shed a little light on which sections of the electrical system I should be checking?

Thanks

Andrew

Hi,
Which bike are we talking about, rt125 or a older ETZ125? Have you got the wiring diagram for your particular bike?
Is the battery fully charged and in good condition?

Hi David,
it's an SM125, I do have the wiring diagram, but it's gibberish to me. It's got a new battery, but it's a bit flat at the moment I think. Still I'm not sure that's the problem, because it does start some times. It's just other times I try to start it and instead of turning over the whole thing just dies - all the electrics turn off and I have to turn the bike off and on again in order for any lights etc. to come on.

Hi,
The first thing I would does is spray WD40 on as many areas of wiring you can reach. In particular the switch on the sidestand seems to be troublesome so sparay around that. Put some in the ignition switch. Also clean and grease the battery terminals. Check the fuses in the holder. Go around the bike and spray as much as you can and check for any loose connections.
Most electrical problems are down to loose wires in terminals or corroded connections. Best way to check is to turn on the power and tug gently at some of the wires and see if anything interesting happens.
