ETZ250 1982 recommissioned

Postby tigcraft » Thu Oct 29, 2020 5:28 pm

Well I finally assembled my ‘oily rag restoration’. I didn’t want a minter but just an honest example was suffice. It wasn’t the worst example I’ve seen but also as it wasn’t on the road for 25years plus it was well thick in gunge, silt and stale fuel. In fact the stale fuel turned to stone just about.

Congrats, I think you did a magnificent job! And it's a nice bike, love the tax disk.

On the 'contents of the tank': that's not what petrol turns into, not even after a million years. I don't know what that is, but when fuel ages, the volatile (lightest) components just evaporate. What you show there is just not present in fuel. Corroded tank? In-line fuel filter?

It was medium corrosion and cleaned well eventually. I have never seen anything like the stuff that came out. The only way to describe is rust turning to stone what’s in the funnel but it was neither rust nor stone. It’s 25years since that tank opened before I got it.

There are 'rust converters' or something, maybe it's something they once put in the tank?

A big help, obviously.

That looks absolutely lovely.. And it's an early one too!

Did you re-paint or just wash and polish it?

Where did you get it from? I see a CX in the background ....

You could say a Fast wash over with a bit of free colour for the tankset and front mudguard, new spokes, new exhaust and misc rubbers. That’s about it really after the thick of grime scraped off with diesel

Aha fair enough.

It's a nice colour. It's similar (but darker) to mine, which I painted in Rustoleum Orange (from B@Q).

It was just pot luck I had that colour as it was a ‘pafinger’ vehicle crane colour RAL2001 I think. I masked round the edges of the decals so inside the letters was the original Orange. There is no evidence what so ever that it was even a different shade as it all polished in so well.

It was such an enjoyable and exiting process. It came together bit by bit as I fitted every single spoke, all the correct original bolts and anything else stripped. Pure bliss
