Not so common ETS 250

Apparently I was not quite satisfied with the number of projects already underway , I carried home another basket case. This time, I believe that I have acquired an ETS 250. I think these are a sportier version of the Trophy with a short production run between the ES and the TS from '69-'72 perhaps.
There is not much to show at the moment as it is in a number of pieces.
I'm currently doing a bit of an inventory to try and establish if all parts are there. So far so good and surprisingly many parts a well preserved in individually marked plastic bags. The guy who sold it to me bought 3 5 used MZ's many years ago ; 3 ets's and 2 ISDT Models all of that 69-72 era. He says he rebuilt the engines of the ETS's (sometime in the distant past) including mine.

I have the option to buy one ( or two) of the ISDT replicas but the seller wants a lot of money for a couple of bikes that have been deteriorating for 20 years or more.
I had another quick look at them a couple of days ago and checked that the motors still turn over - both still turn over.

I see, apologies. That looks quite like the early TS.

While they might have been good in trialling the 60's tight central European woods, I'm not sure such an ISDT model would be very desirable on the wide open Australian dirt tracks I saw on your pics.

I had a whole day dedicated to motorcycle maintenance yesterday. Although I spend most of it on the ETZ which I have running but waiting on a sprocket spacer before I test it on the road. I did take some time to try and organise the boxes of parts for the ETS; apart from cables , most of the parts seem to be there as far as I can see . There are some extra parts which may come in handy, and quite a few parts which seem to be in their original packaging.

The ETS has a 16 inch rear and 18inch front wheel.


The bloke that sold me the ETS is well into his Eighties now , a racer, tuner and frame builder in his day and still loves his bikes. Reading this little piece in Old Bike Australia (OBA) gave me a glimpse of the bike history and the story of the parts

Slowly . I have been fafing with a few things like rebuilding the rear wheel ( sent you a PM) removing the rust from inside fork legs and cleaning up the frame.
I am focussing my attention on the ETZ at the moment. I have come to the realisation that I have too many projects on .

As long as you can still find spares, all these projects have no real urgency. The bike will only get older, but it shouldn't loose value.

Yet a man having too many balls in the air can be real worry.

That really is the beauty with MZ's.. even compared to certain Japanese manufacturers (cough, suzuki, cough), the aftermarket and original equipment (although that obviously diminishes the more time goes on), is absolutely amazing. Quality can sometimes be an issue (and then that is where you buy Original DDR/GDR), but.. you can honestly almost buy anything...!

Are you sure this is the right brake drum ?
For me it looks like one from TS/ES 150 bikes.
The ETS 250 drum should look like this:

I see what you mean. I will have to investigate further. I hope that wheel fits, The spokes weren't cheap.

The wheel you have should has a diameter of 150 mm in the brake side.
The original wheel has 160 mm diameter.
Can you send a picture of the brake shoes you have for this wheel ?
