Came upon a bloke on an MZ today, and stopped for a chat.

Aparrently he had converted it to 301 spec, thought you could only do this to the ETZ models.

Was he having me on, or had he simply overbored his TS cylinder and did some head work?

It is possible to do that.
You have to take an ETZ 300 piston.
As it is longer than the TS piston, you have to put an aluminium plate under the cylinder to lift up the cylinder.

And surely you have to work on the cylinderhead...As you need to do on the ETZ 300 ccm conversion.

Thanks for that, it just crossed my mind that since I have a TS it is something I might consider doing, having had a 301 a few years ago I think that the small increase in capacity does make a noticeable difference.

Any idea what the difference in piston height is ?

I know someone who has put in 300cc mahle piston in an ES250 Trophy. He did have to machine various things to get it to fit.
1973 MZ ES250/2 - 17,000 miles - The project! :)
1979 Suzuki TS185ER - 9,000 miles - Mud :)
1981 Honda CX500B - 91,000 miles - Long Distance :)
1987 MZ ETZ300 - 38,000 miles - Sun :)
1989 MZ ETZ251 - 49,000 miles - Commute :)

Sounds like too much hassle !

I will leave my TS as it is, since it seems to be going pretty well now :mrgreen:

I think that's the best strategy Andy. When it runs well, keep it as original as possible. For fast best use another bike.

Unless of course you like modifying, that too can be an objective on its own.
