Just writing to conclude this topic in case it helps others.
The new solid state regulate has worked.
I can now measure current going into the battery when the engine is running.
Once I get the clutch sorted, a test ride beckons.
Thanks for the tips.

Hi Stevebod. A few years ago, I Re- commissioned a MZ TS 150, and the gear box oil recommended to me on this forum was to use a light gear oil, so I used Silkolene gear oil light sae 75/80 - GL 3/4. Do not use GL 5 as this has friction inhibiters and with cause the clutch to slip. The bike ran beautifully with a great clutch and gearchange.

I've got some light GL4 oil in there at the moment, but am still seeing issues.
I have started another thread on the clutch and I think I will need to inspect the clutch parts more thoroughly.
