Will a ETZ 251 engine fit into a 301 frame? - don't think so

Postby stuart-glos » Sat Aug 04, 2012 1:40 pm

I have to rebuild the gearbox on my 301 project, so thought I'd buy an ETZ251 engine to use for the time being.

But I can't get it to fit...

With the 2 engine bolts fitted the cylinder head is about 2cm too far forward from the head-stay. With the head-stay bolted up I can only fit 1 engine bolt.

I had a quick measure up and the 251 and 301 engines appear to be the same size as do the engine plates on the 251 frame compared to the 301 frame.

Any ideas?

thanks

Hi stuart.

You are right the two engines are dimentionally the same, they are interchangable.

Try fitting the bottom rear mounting first then the head steady, then top rear.

I owe you a beer!

Got the engine fitted eventually but still took a lot of jiggling and swearing - I even had to remove the swing arm to give me a bit more play for the engine plates. Seems strange - I can remove and replace the 301 engine fairly easily but this 251 engine just didn't want to go in.

Still, it's in now and I don't plan to take it out for a good while - it even fired up for a few seconds, but that'll do for the time being as there's no air filter and the loom is not fitted yet.

Thanks again

Stuart.

Are you sure the engine is a 251, and not a ETZ250, I think they should be the same but this could explain the tight fit.

I thought only the exhaust port hight was different, but maybe not, if you do have the ETZ motor, you may struggle with the exhaust down pipe coming into contact with the front mudguard.

The engine is from a Kanuni (year 2000) so I assume the engine is an ETZ251. I'm unsure where to look on the engine to confirm, though.

I don't have the front mudguard fitted at the moment but the exhaust clears the front wheel & tyre without any problems.

Perhaps it was just my technique that was wrong - the second engine plate hole was only out by 5mm but I just couldn't get it lined up to accept the bolt.

cheers

Yes stuart,

Kanuni's are 251/301

Good to hear you got it sorted.

I currently have a 301 engine in a 251 frame in my back garden...
