Ts250/1 crankshaft oil seal direction

Postby Jamesk » Sat Mar 19, 2016 7:03 am

Hi everyone. I'm currently rebuilding a ts250/1 motor. Iv just spueezed in the crankshaft oil seals. Iv pushed them in both with the lips facing inwards, but now I'm worrying myself that one should be facing out! Does it even matter? Im really not sure and my Haynes manual is not helpful at all. Can anybody tell me the good or bad news please? (Not sure how il get it out again easily if it is wrong!)
Thanks
Jamesk

Bad news.
The one on the clutch side is with the open side showing outside towards the clutch .

Lots of us have made that error, and happily ridden around for many thousands of miles. From what I've seen, it makes no difference.

Don't stress about it, and get on with riding your bike.

I think that the guys from MZ had a reason to put the seal this way...

The idea is that the higher pressure, though very small in this application, assists the sealing action. So the atmospheric pressure outside the crankcase, which is higher than the pressure inside, pushes the seal onto the crankshaft assisting the spring.

I don´t think that thr pressure in the clutch area is higher than the pressure in the crankcase. On the contrary!

And I take the middle option... sometimes it is higher, sometimes lower!
