Gearing

Postby Andy_C » Wed Sep 21, 2016 6:51 am

I now have the ETZ 250 that I bought earlier this year in good running order and pretty pleased with it.

I notice that it has a 17tooth gearbox sprocket fitted, the manual says that as standard they are fitted with a 19tooth gearbox sprocket.

Obviousley the 17 tooth sprocket will give it a bit more acceleration but will be revving harder for any given speed.

Just looking for advice on gearing - the bike will be solo use only and for fairly short distance riding.

Any thoughts?

Hello. I have an 18 on my ETZ250 at current. I would say that the 17 would give better economy in the town what with requiring less throttle to move off, and being in a higher gear, but obviously not going to get the maximum top speed out of the machine. Depending on what sort of roads you ride on, your decision will change.

The 18 I am on seems a good middle ground. I remember that the Honda CG125 Brazil models (1985-91) had a larger rear sprocket. I never found an official reason why, but I can only imagine it is for economy. It didn't allow the bike to rev out beyond 55mph. I changed the front sprocket one tooth lower (equal to three at the back essentially making it stock Japanese gearing) and I could get to 61mph. Noticably quicker too.

Equally, the bike could have been fitted with a sidecar?? Although 15 is what is recommended for the bikes if one is fitted.

german bikes i have had all seem to be geared too tall

i use a 52 tooth rear from a 125sm on my rt125(stock is 49)
and it does 69 mph WFO
but climbs hills and does CITY traffic much better

my rotax 500 was way to tall it's got a 16 tooth front now
dave
most roads where i live are posted 45mph and 55 a couple 60 or 65 but very limited miles of the high speed roads

Probably go up to an 18tooth as most of my riding is on the open road.

Thanks for the replies

Update on this one.

Fitted an 18 tooth gearbox sprocket - as expected gives it slightly longer legs and no discernable effect on acceleration.

Feels like it probably would not pull max revs with this sprocket but used to wih the 17t.

The bike "feels" better with the 17t sprocket - possibly because it is not revving so hard.

Might be my imagination but it seems to help with the surging - pretty happy with how it is after a lot of carb fiddling but it seems that bit less prone to the surge with the 17t.
