etz oil pump or premix?

Postby otb123 » Sun Aug 25, 2019 11:38 am

While sorting all the essential running jobs on my etz, I am considering if I should go premix or keep the oil pump... While this forum would suggest the oil pump is generally reliable, there are a number of problems that could arise that could also be significant...

I'm not too concerned about having to premix, also not that concerned about the cost if I had to burn a little extra oil, in light of that is there any other reason I should keep the autolub over just removing the pump an going full premix?

What's the general opinion?

Cheers

I use pre-mix on both my 250 and 251- a main reason for that is the want of a lighter throttle

But in reality- I don't care about carrying spare oil with me. I fill up at roughly (i'm not picky or anal) at a 30:1 ratio.

Your BVF will last longer using premix.

All piston port two strokes that I have used have always had oily carb slides. Probably due to spit back. This can be observed with the naked eye when operating the motor with open carbs. You will observe a mist of fuel hovering around the inlet. I can remember it was common to install a piece of sponge behind the carbs when I was racing TZ's in order to stop the spit back oiling the frame.

Yes the fuel mix for a TZ was usually 1 litre of R30 in a 20 litre drum than filled up with shell 115/145 so about 19:1. One thing I noticed over the years is that oil injection two strokes seem to suffer from carboned up mufflers more than premix two strokes.

I usually get 21 to 23 km per litre. Rarely do I use more fuel than that so I just put in 1 ml of oil for every kilometer travelled. EG; if I have travelled 230km I add 230ml of oil and fill up. I do check my sums afterwards and find that I run between 45 and 49 to one.

I hope you have closed off the breather tube to the oil tank as well. I once stored an etz tank half full in a damp shed, open to the air through the breather tube. It rusted.
