But I would recommend periodic replacement of the cable as a part of maintenance. When I examined the cable, it just pulled out, no damage. Would also carry that cable as a back-up on a long road trip.

I live in Florida with a lot of moisture and condensation. I would ride in the woods on weekends, with an occasional hare scramble or enduro. When checking the lube on any of the cables, always found a sticky and gummy mess. The shop that I hung around found out that the 'professional' racing teams were using 'motor oil' as their cable lubricant. I started using motor oil as a cable lubricant on my dirt bikes. After that, no cruddy build up on cables, seems to work fine.

I wish I had lubed my cable on this bike, maybe it would not have pulled loose.

I ordered the Motion Pro cable 03-0170, for 1987-2009 Ninja 500, from eBay for ~$16US with free shipping. My lever did not have an adjuster on it. So, I put one on. The cable would not have worked as well without the adjuster. Will post pics asap.

A followup for the clutch cable substitution.....

Has been working well.
Note the need for an adaptor at the lever end and resulting close fit to the top triple clamp..

now we know why no adjuster
there is no room for one
short bars were always a bad idea on a street bike

Put a hydraulic clutch on there and forget about it. I love mine but I don't think they make it anymore. Probably need to look at a Magura model if you want one. It's worth it.
