Supa5 Sidecar Outfit alternative front end

Hi all,

A 76 Supa 5 Combination has just come into my possession, it has had the engine recently rebuilt and runs reasonably well, however handling and brakes are woeful. First change will be wider handlebars to help control it but the major issue is brakes.

Is anyone aware of a front end from another bike, pref with a disc brake that will fit a TS? I'm also led to believe that a rear TS wheel will also fit the front, the current rear brake is just about passable but the front brake does next to nothing and I am reluctant to put anyone in the side car until the brakes can be improved.

Any suggestions to upgrade braking would be appreciated.

Hear’s a few pics to answer some questions:

Original narrow, flat bars that lacked leverage and made it difficult to steer, then the new wider bars with 2” rise which have made it much easier to control.

Ref the frame and width of the sidecar; it looks to me like its been home made, seems like it was a simple flat platform that could be adapted to any use. It is certainly not a complete Squire built unit, but most likely a Squire sidecar body bolted on to a universal platform, hence the width of it.

i had an r51/3 BMW with light chair
guy crowed me in traffic
i sat the chair wheel up on the sidewalk
bringing it off the curb i bent the handle bar trying to get it off the curb

there is a great bit of stress when you add the sidecar
a 900/6 motor in a /2 frame will work for pulling a camping trailer
but pulling a side car with the same set up is not a good idea
and disk brakes recommended
getting it stopped will give you gray hair
if you let the passenger load the bike with camping gear

Front tyre size is: 3.25 x 16.

To be honest I’m thinking of splitting it and restoring the bike as a solo, it is a huge stress on a small bike, both for the engine and frame. Lots of suggestions here for improvements but none of them easy or cheap, finding the parts could be difficult and I’m not wanting to pay new prices for a front end etc.

The engine is not yet run in following a full rebuild by Burwins ordered by the previous owner, so a restoration would focus on the frame and body panels etc the hard bit (engine and running gear) has been done. Decision decisions?

Ta, yes I think it'll be far more desirable & valuable as a solo bike!

Sidecarectomy now complete, was a PITA as it was welded on, the weight of it was unbelievable; no wonder the bike struggled.

Well thats the sidecar gone, a nice man came and took it away between Xmas and New Year, apparently it will be mounted on a new chassis and attached to an old Triumph, so it will live on. So I now have a few £s to put towards the bike as a solo project..
